About Bill Shiell
“Here am I; send me.” – Isaiah 6:8
Education and Early Ministry
Bill Shiell, a native of Pensacola, Florida, embarked on his professional journey with an undergraduate degree from Samford University. He furthered his theological education by earning both an M.Div. and Ph.D. in New Testament Studies from Baylor University.
His calling into pastoral leadership began in 1998. He served as senior pastor at First Baptist Church in McGregor, Texas, and later at Southland Baptist Church in San Angelo, Texas.
Leadership in the Church and Seminary
Bill’s pastoral journey took him to First Baptist Church in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he led the congregation until 2013. He then returned to his home state to serve as the senior pastor at First Baptist Church in Tallahassee, Florida.
From 2017 to 2023, Bill served as President and Professor of Pastoral Theology and Preaching at Northern Seminary in Lisle, Illinois. Under his leadership, the seminary:
- Relocated its campus
- Increased enrollment by 72%
- Graduated the largest back-to-back classes in over 60 years

Bill’s wife, Kelly, is the Executive Director of the Lift Center at Christ Church in Oak Brook and Lombard, Illinois. Together, they have two sons, Parker and Drake.
Speaking, Writing, and Teaching Style
Bill is the author of seven books and numerous articles. Known for his extemporaneous speaking style, he has memorized and performed full passages like the Gospel of Mark and the Sermon on the Mount.
At the core of his teaching is a powerful message: Joy is found through weakness, failure, and change.
Consulting and Broader Influence
In addition to pastoring and teaching, Bill is a sought-after consultant and guest preacher, helping individuals and nonprofits expand their mission, message, and resources. His guidance has made a significant impact on leaders across the country.
Philosophy and Values
Bill believes life’s unexpected turns are invitations to receive grace, extend hospitality, and demonstrate love, compassion, and forgiveness. His theology is grounded in action—faith is a full-time adventure of responding to God’s call.
“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send and who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I; send me!’” — Isaiah 6:8
